Apple Watch Setup & Usage
The Meta Caddie watch app extends your iPhone round to your wrist — yardages on demand, automatic shot detection, quick score entry, and caddie questions without touching your phone.
Requirements
| Requirement | Minimum |
|---|---|
| watchOS | 10.0 |
| iPhone | Running Meta Caddie with an active round |
| Series for swing detection | Series 4 or newer |
| Best swing detection | Series 9 / Ultra 2 |
The watch app requires the iPhone app. It cannot start or manage a round independently.
Installation
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Scroll to Available Apps and find Meta Caddie.
- Tap Install.
- Once installed, the Meta Caddie app appears on your watch face.
You do not need to open the watch app manually to start using it — once a round is active on your iPhone, the watch connects automatically.
What the watch shows
When a round is active, the watch face displays:
- Distance to front of the green
- Distance to center of the green (default large display)
- Distance to back of the green
- Active hazards for the current hole — carry distance to bunkers, water, or out-of-bounds
Yardages update continuously as you walk. You do not need to tap anything — the watch reads your GPS position from your iPhone and refreshes the display in real time.
The watch uses the iPhone's GPS, not an onboard GPS chip. Keep your iPhone in your pocket during the round for accurate yardages.
Asking the caddie from your watch
You can query the caddie directly from the watch without touching your phone.
- Tap the chat bubble icon on the watch face.
- Dictate your question — the watch uses Siri's on-device speech recognition.
- The caddie's response appears as text on the watch display and plays through your iPhone speaker or AirPods.
Caddie queries from the watch require a network connection. The same natural-language questions you ask on iPhone work here:
- "What club?"
- "How far is the bunker?"
- "What's the wind?"
- "Conservative play."
Short questions get faster responses. The caddie is optimized for one-sentence queries at the watch.
Score entry
Tap the scorecard icon to open hole-by-hole score entry.
- Rotate the Digital Crown to scroll through scores.
- Tap a hole to edit.
- Tap Done — the score syncs to your iPhone immediately.
Automatic shot detection
When you swing, the watch accelerometers detect the motion and log a shot automatically.
After each detected swing, the watch prompts you:
- Club confirmation — scroll the Digital Crown or tap to select the club you used.
- Result tagging — mark the result: Fairway, Rough, Bunker, Green, or Short.
Shot data syncs to your iPhone round in real time. The caddie uses this data to refine recommendations as the round progresses.
Shot detection accuracy
Detection works best on full swings. Chips and putts may trigger a prompt — dismiss it with the X button if the shot should not be logged. Series 9 and Ultra 2 have the best detection rates due to the improved motion coprocessor.
Syncing mid-round
If you open the watch app after a round is already in progress on your iPhone, the watch sends a sync request to the iPhone and populates within a second. You do not need to restart the round or manually trigger a sync.
If the watch display shows a blank yardage or "Waiting for round," it means the iPhone round has not started yet. Start the round on your iPhone first.
Complications
Meta Caddie supports watch complications for quick access. Long-press your watch face, tap Edit, and add the Meta Caddie complication to put distance-to-center one tap away from any screen.
